Dent Hangs with Bono and Stevie Wonder At Global Citizens Music Festival

If you ask random people on the street what they think members of Congress do on a daily basis, most would imagine them sitting in Congressional meetings, reading and passing laws, or going out campaigning for their next election. But people have trouble realizing that there is much more to being good Congressmen than all these components. Charlie Dent is a good example of a Congressman who does all this and more. A perfect example comes from his work this week at the Global Citizens music festival in New York City. Dent was chosen to represent America and interact with the United Nations secretary general. By being chosen as the only representative for America, it shows that Dent is very well respected. The festival’s purpose is to publicize the Global Poverty Project, an international poverty education and advocacy organization (Lehigh Valley Music, 2013). This organization is an attempt to educate people about world poverty and finding a way to end it for good. One of the event consulters from festival spoke about Dent, stating “As we were looking for world leaders, he plays a prominent role in the U.S. foreign aid budget. I look forward to having Mr. Dent represent the Lehigh Valley and the world in our fight during this amazing festival” (Lehigh Valley Music, 2013). The festival itself may have been about poverty, but this did more for Dent than just getting a chance to advertise the organization. It showed Dent as a stand out in Congress on foreign issues, a huge plus for him especially with everything that is happening in Syria. If Dent’s constitutes don’t know which way they feel about Syria, they know that if they side with Dent on his viewpoint to not invade, they have an educated representative who is very experienced in foreign politics. Also, the same goes for other congressional members as well. If they are wishy washy on their decision, they know that Dent is one member of Congress against invasion, and a very educated, experienced member at that. They could look at his experience with foreign politics and see that his reasoning to not invade Syria would make a lot of sense. While Dent does plenty else in Congress to show his prestige, this festival was a great reward to educate not just about poverty, but to show how experienced he really is with foreign politics. Maybe Dent should run for president in 2016!
