The man..The myth...The legend

Senator Harry Mason Reid was born December 2nd, 1939 in Searchlight, Nevada to a poor family of 4. Reid had to be boarded with relatives 40 miles away in Henderson, Nevada. There he attended Basic High School, upon graduating he enrolled at Southern Utah University. He ended up graduating from Utah State University where he double majored in political science and history, he also minored in economics. He attained his Juris Doctor from George Washington University Law School. Reid married to high school sweet heart in 1959 they have 5 children together. Reid is also a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Senator Reid returned to Nevada with his Juris Doctor and started his political career as the city attorney for Henderson. In 1968 at age 28 Reid was elected to the Nevada Assembly, which is the lower house of the Nevada Legislature and consists of 42 members. Then at age 30 Reid successfully ran for the office of Lieutenant Governor of Nevada. He served from 1971 til 1974, in 74 he took his first shot at running for U.S. Senate. He lost a closely contested battle. Reid then took his minor in economics and served as chairman of the Nevada Gaming Commission from 77 to 81. Reid as chairman was apart of a successful sting operation with the FBI during his tenure. He was offered a bribe to approve new casino games, Reid refused the bribe and brought the evidence to the FBI. Reid decided it was time to further his political ambitions and in 1982 he won the Democratic nomination and then easily won the general election to become the Representative in the House for the 1st district of Nevada based in Las Vegas. Reid only served two terms before he turned his eyes to an empty Senate seat in 1986. Reid's rise in the Senate wasn't fast. His first leadership position came as minority whip from 1999-2001, then as majority whip from 2001-2003, then again as minority whip from 2003-2005. He ascended the latter yet again and became the minority leader from 2005-2007. He then became the majority leader in 2007 and has since held that position. He sits on two committees, The Select Committee on Intelligence and also serves on the Joint Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies. Reid in 2001 was elected to the Gaming Hall of Fame. Reid is a very active member of the Senate. He brought a Senate ethics bill to vote which passed. A liberal thinker at heart but a stout Mormon his position on issues like abortion and same sex marriage seem to be in conflicts with his beliefs and duty. Reid also believes that the Senate will authorize military action in Syria.
