Since 2008 Connecticut's 4th district has been represented by the same man democrat Jim Himes. I not going to talk about his international affairs and his lack of concern for those who voted for him because I'm not the only person who feels this way. Enter John Shaban a republican canidate who feels he can take that seat from Himes.
A little bit about Shaban he is a partner at Whitman Breed Abbot & Morgan a firm based in Greenwich, Connecticut which focuses on construction disputes, intellectual property protection, security litigation and enviroment/enregy law. While a republican his political views are not that of the steryotypical conservitave. As a state representative he voted in favor of strict state gun control measures and is also pro choice for both abortion and marriage saying that "people's private choices arer people's private choices."
There are two key issues that Shaban and Himes really differ. The first is how much time should a representative should spend with his constituents. My opinion about what being a good representative is that it's fine to go after big national and international issues but also to make some time to focus on who voted you into office and Shaban doesn't think that of Himes. Shaban believes that Himes is giving Connecticut a raw deal because the state is giving so much in federal taxes that there was hardly anything for the funding of school and infrastructure. He felt that for every dollar Connecticut sends to Washington they only give back 65 cents for the state to spend. To me that is absurd to think that we aren't even getting our money back for things that this state desperatley needs and Himes doesn't seem to mind.
Finally there is the Iran nuclear deal where if one was following the news is that most democrats support this deal and all republicans are against it. All Connecticut congressmen, who are all democrats, fully support this deal which lift sanctions against Iran. Shaban doesn't see it the same way democrats do in that like North Korea and Russia Iran won't honor the terms of the agreement because it will provide billions of dollars in relief to Iran in exchange for nothing which will give Iran the resources to rebuild it's nuclear program which he believes will build weapons and ignores their global sponsorship of terrorism, human rights abuse and threats to Isreal.
So we have a candidate who has had experience in both the business and political sphere and has firm beliefs and key concerns that go against Jim Himes the only question that remains is can he be able to gain the votes needed to take out Himes? The answer will be revealed in the months to come.
