Senator Gillibrand Did Not Let Being on Crutches Stop Her from Doing Work in Washington and in New York

As Congress was coming up with an agreement to end the government shutdown and make sure our country was able to pay our bills, Senator Gillibrand had a little setback of her own this week.  According to the Roll Call Senator Gillibrand got many looks from reporters as she walked off the Senate floor after a vote using crutches. Senator Gillibrand stated to reporters “It is one hell of a story, but I am not going to tell you about it.”  Then later a spokesperson for Kirsten Gillibrand stated how she loves to exercise and never skips a day going to the gym; she did something to her calf and will probably be on crutches for about two weeks. The article mentions that any injury for Kirsten Gillibrand can have major implications since she is captain   of the Women’s Congressional Softball Team and is one of the best female athletes in Congress. Last year, during the 2013 charity softball game Senator Gillibrand hit two home runs.  Everyone is hoping she recovers from her injury quickly because the softball team needs her this year.
Senator Gillibrand in a quote on her facebook page after the shutdown ended pushed the need for Bipartisanship in Washington.  She said in her quote “the completely unnecessary Shutdown that we finally ended last night cost our nation 24 billion and 6 percent of GDP growth. My hope is that congress can now come to a long term budget agreement so we can stop going from manufactured crisis to manufactured crisis.” Senator Gillibrand later in the week when she went home to New York showed how Bipartisanship can work by appearing in two separate venues with New York’s 19th District Republican Congressman Chris Gibson.  One event was in Acra New York at the Acroforesty Resource Center discussing the issue of Lyme disease.  According to the Daily Freemen News, Senator Gillibrand and Congressman Gibson talked about a bill they are introducing together  to increase awareness for  Lyme disease  and improving diagnosis and treatments of tick-borne illnesses. According to a News Clip done by YNN Hudson Valley, Senator Gillibrand and Congressmen Gibson are showing how to work together between parties in a time our country is more divided than ever.  YNN also mentions that both these politicians have a long history of working together across party lines. Chris Gibson said in a quote, “Yes we are different parties, but we are Americans first.” Also Congressmen Gibson mentioned how he worked with Senator Gillibrand on many issues. Senator Gillibrand said in a quote “It shouldn’t be unusual. This is what the public asks of us, what the American people demand. What New Yorkers need is members of Congress who work together to solve this problems.” This is a link to YNN clip.             Senator Gillibrand and Chris Gibson also toured Flounders Factory a heating a cooling unit factory in Upstate New York. According to The Register Star, after the tour both of them, in a private meeting discussed the military sexual assault bill that Senator Gillibrand is working so hard to pass in Congress.  The article states Congressmen Gibson is in support of her work on this bill and the two members of congress had a very civil conversation.  Congressmen Gibson said in a quote “Without question sexual assault has no place in our military.” He also stated he supports the bill because we need to do everything possible to protect our members of the military.
Only time will tell if Senator Gillibrand’s willingness to show how bipartisanship and working across the aisle can be done at home will spread to the hill. Also, if this, as any political motive of Senator Gillibrand will have an effect since she is one of the possible choices on the list for presidential candidates in 2016 if Hilary Clinton decides not to run.
