Throughout the semester and Lowey’s numerous years as a Representative, we have seen Congresswoman Lowey’s commitment to change, specifically in regards to human rights. She has time and time again proved that she wants her legislation to directly affect, and improve the lives of, her constituents.
This week Congresswoman Lowey reintroduced the discussion of the International Violence Against Women Act onto the floor of the House of Representatives. The legislation is supported by members on both sides of the aisle. IVAWA works to decrease violence against women throughout the world. It covers the realm of physical abuse, sexual abuse and more. Lowey wants the State Department to develop a comprehensive plan to stop the violence. Lowey made statement about the importance of the passage of this legislation, “That is why addressing violence against women and girls must be a priority of the United States. We must pass IVAWA to take real and meaningful steps toward protecting women, reducing poverty, and promoting economic development and stability around the world.” Amnesty International is backing Lowey’s initiative.
How does this directly relate to her constituents? Violence against women is rampant; it is not only seen across the globe, but in the homes of American’s every day. The changes and passing in the IVAWA would force the American political system to make violence against women one of the most important aspects of foreign affairs. Ending the silence about violence against women internationally would be a giant stride towards increased knowledge about the subject, which subsequently could help the women of the United States.
