This week Senator Reid announced
that he would like to get a Senate vote on the Employment Non-Discrimination
Act. ENDA would ban workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation
and gender identity.[i]
ENDA has been around for a while but it hasn’t been voted on since 2007 and earlier
it passed through the Senate committee. Reid has long been a supporter of ENDA,
cosponsoring it as early as 1997. All except 2 Democratic senators have
cosigned the bill. It will be interesting to watch the development of this bill
as it travels through the two chambers. Reid with this move look like he’s
accomplishing his policy goals and his goal to be reelected now with all the
attention on rights for LGBT.
