Just like this week in class, Congress is working on passing a budget. Congresswoman Nita Lowey is on the Budget Conference Committee, and has been working hard this week to reach an agreement. On November 13th scant progress had been made. Both Chairman Ryan and Chairwoman Murray have stated that the two parties are working hard to find a solution and work with one another across the aisle. Lowey has been pushing the chairs to come to an agreement; Lowey is a ranking member on the Appropriations Committee, and wants a number as soon as possible so that the Appropriations Committee can begin their work. Congresswoman Lowey has not only urged the chairs to come to an agreement, but the whole budget conference committee. Lowey made a statement on November 15th, stating “As we are keenly aware January 15 is the deadline for passing legislation to keep the government running, this conference committee must be successful in reaching agreements on a funding level for fiscal year 2014 with enough time for bills to pass before January 15.” Lowey fears another government shutdown, not only because of the bad press it gave Congress, but because of the effects it has had on our nation’s economy.
Lowey has not just been focusing on the Budget Conference Committee. Earlier this week Congresswoman Lowey appeared at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in Palisades, New York, to discuss “federal investment in science and public health with officials from Columbia, New York University and Pace University.” More on the homescale level as well, Lowey has begun working with other Democrats to oppose the new On-The-Farm rules that the FSMA have introduced. Some of the rules are incredibly specific and may affect our farmers production of produce. Congresswoman Lowey, along with her colleagues, originally supported the Farm Bill, but will no longer support it with these provisions.
